African Skies

Katie and I returned from Africa about 5 days ago now, and we're still getting our bodies back into this time zone.

I had a few days of early morning hours to finish the film I've made of our trip. So, I'm thankful for that. Here is the film in two parts. In total, it's 16 minutes long.

PART 1 of 2

PART 2 of 2

The film speaks for itself. We had a life changing trip.

Update from Zambia

I'm in an internet cafe in Lusaka at the moment. We've been here two days after the longest journey of my life across the Atlantic.

We're staying at an orphanage/adoption agency called "The House of Moses," and over the past few days have been to the shanty towns/compounds outside the city. The poorest of the poor. We've visited a number of schools where the students have to walk home if they need to go to the bathroom, and the teachers are paid around $20/month. No electricity either, the kids have to do their work by the light of one small window in a dark room.

It's emotionally exausting on many levels, but being here, you realize many things. Firstly, these kids only know this life, and they are genuinely happy to see you. Beautiful smiles, and so much laughter. Your heart breaks for the squalor they live in, but then you see a homemade slide made out of trash that the children are enjoying playing on, and you realize that children are children no matter where you are.

If someone were to visit Kanyama, the largest compound outside the capital of Lusaka, and were to bring a bag full of soccer balls and distribute them among the kids there, they'd be giving these children months, if not YEARS of fun... Right now they kick balls of clothing and trash.

I'm taping all of our experiences for a little "documentary" of our trip. I'm getting so much good footage it's scary. It will all speak for itself. I can't do it justice with mere words.

I finally realize why Dave Chapelle went to AFRICA to get in touch with himself again... It's a whole different world out here. The air, sky, water, trees, dirt, and eyes are different out here. This trip will be with me for the rest of my days.

New Video, and on to Africa!

Here's a little diddy I put together this morning featuring scenes from our recent jaunt to Puerto Rico!

Katie and I are packing for Africa at the moment. We leave for a 26(!) hour flight to Lusaka, Zambia on Sunday morning. Here's our journey:

1. Atlanta → D.C.
2. D.C. → Dakar, Senegal
3. Dakar, Senegal → J'burg, South Africa
4. J'burg, South Africa → Lusaka, Zambia

We'll be there for 10 days, and I'm in charge of documenting the trip!

Expect more video soon!

Truth in Advertising

I tell ya, sometimes the whole "sex sells" thing can get really old. I mean, who needs to see some boobies to help with your choice of wristwatches?

Then something like this comes along and turns brilliant advertising into a whole new thing for me...

I'll buy whatever they're selling!

HAHAHA!

De Island of De Sun!

As you can see by the pics above, KT and I have just returned from a wonderful week in Puerto Rico with my best friend Yamil!

It's about freakin time we got down there too as Yamil and I have seen each other through the last ten years or so... We had an amazing time! What incredible artistry in everything from history to culture.

Some of our favorite stops were the El Yunque Rainforest, The Arecibo Radio Observatory, and the Rio Camuy Cave Park.

We're very sunburned at the moment, having spent a day snorkeling off of Icacos Island with less than waterproof sunscreen. I even got stung by a jellyfish that I didn't see until it was two inches from my face. It burned a bit, but didn't last more than 5 minutes...

We ended our trip last night by having an incredible meal at Kudeta in Old San Juan. One of the top ten best meals I've had in all my days.

Enough about us though, our trip wouldn't have been half as good if it wern't for Yamil and his large loving familia. Thanks again, Yamiljo, Marta, Daliana, Idalia, Yamil Sr., Fran, Anna Sophia, Hector, Giselle, and Lourdes! We love you all and look forward to seeing you again sometime soon!
